A Generous Life

The Beauty in Giving

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.

Gathering Hymn

Almighty God

Verse 1
Almighty God
to you all hearts are open
Search and know
our thoughts and anxious fears
Wash us in
the fountain of your mercy
Come with your light,
we cannot hide from you

Verse 2
Almighty God
to you all hearts are open
With gratitude
we raise our song to you
Come and fill
the praises of your people
In grace and truth,
you make us new again

Chorus
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Verse 3
Almighty God
to you all hearts are open
We long for more
than what this world provides
No shallow spring
will ever satisfy us
Your river deep
floods over everything

Gathering Prayer

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect

Almighty God, you sent your Son Jesus Christ to be the light of the world. Free us from all that darkens and ensnares us, and bring us to eternal light and joy; through the power of him who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word

The First Reading: 1 Corinthians 13:1-3

8 We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, 2 for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. 3 For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, 4 begging us earnestly for the favour of taking part in the relief of the saints— 5 and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. 6 Accordingly, we urged Titus that as he had started, so he should complete among you this act of grace. 7 But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that you excel in this act of grace also.

8 I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich. 10 And in this matter I give my judgement: this benefits you, who a year ago started not only to do this work but also to desire to do it. 11 So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have. 12 For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have. 13 For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness 14 your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. 15 As it is written, “Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.”

The word of the Lord
Thanks be to God.

Gospel Hymn

Praise to the Lord

Verse 1
Praise to the Lord,
The almighty the King of creation
O my soul praise him
For he is thy health and salvation
All ye who hear,
now to his temple draw near
Praise Him in glad adoration

Verse 2
Praise to the Lord,
Above all things
so wonderfully reigning
Sheltering you under his wings
And so gently sustaining
Have you not seen?
All that is needful has been
Sent by his gracious ordaining

Verse 3
Praise to the Lord,
Oh let all that is in me adore Him
All that has life and breath
Come now with praises before Him

All ye who hear,
now to his temple draw near
Ponder anew,
what the Almighty can do
Let the amen
sound from his people again
Gladly forever adore Him

Gospel Reading:

Mark 12:28-34, 41-44

The Lord be with you.
And with thy spirit.
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to MATTHEW.
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

28 And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that he is one, and there is no other besides him. 33 And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbour as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And after that no one dared to ask him any more questions.

41 And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. 43 And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. 44 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”

The Gospel of Christ.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Apostles Creed

The congregations stands

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

Lord our God:
show us the path of life.

          At the prayers conclusion:

Merciful Father,
accept these prayers
for the sake of your Son
our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Confession

The Priest calls the people to confession, then all say together.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

The Priest prays the Absolution

Offertory Hymn

O God Show Mercy to Us

Verse 1
O God, show mercy to us,
and bless us with your grace;
and cause to shine upon us
the brightness of your face;
so that your way most holy
on earth may soon be known,
and unto every people
your saving grace be shown.
Let all the peoples praise you;
let all the nations sing;
in every land let praises
and songs of gladness ring.

Verse 2
For you will judge the peoples
In truth and righteousness,
and on the earth all nations
will your just rule confess.
Let all the peoples praise you;
let all the nations sing.
Then earth in rich abundance
To us its fruit will bring.
The Lord our God will bless us;
our God will blessing send,
and all the earth will worship
To its remotest end.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

Holy God, in this eucharist we renew our baptismal covenant. Help us, through our offering this day, to renounce all things that draw us from your love. This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

…Now with all creation we raise our voices
to proclaim the glory of your name.

Holy, holy, Lord,
God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full, full of your glory.
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna,
hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes
who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna,
hosanna in the highest.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,  the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

“I am the bread which has come down from
heaven,” says the Lord.
Give us this bread for ever.
“I am the vine, you are the branches.”
May we dwell in him, as he lives in us.

Communion Hymn

He's Always Been Faithful

Verse 1
Morning by morning,
I wake up to find
The power and comfort
of God's hand in mine
Season by season,
I watch Him, amazed
In awe of the mystery
of His perfect ways

Refrain
All I have need of,
His hand will provide
He's always been faithful to me

Verse 2
I can't remember
a trial or a pain
He did not recycle
to bring me gain
I can't remember
one single regret
In serving God only
and trusting His hand

Verse 3
This is my anthem,
this is my song
The theme of the stories
I've heard for so long
God has been faithful,
He will be again
His loving compassion,
it knows no end

Prayer after Communion

Gracious God, in this sacrament we have shared the body and blood of Christ. May we who have been nourished by holy things bear witness to his light, and share in his eternal priesthood; for he is Lord for ever and ever. Amen.

Closing Hymn

Blessed Assurance

Verse 1
Blessed assurance,
Jesus is mine
O what a foretaste
of glory divine!
Heir of salvation,
purchase of God
Born of his spirit,
washed in his blood

Refrain
This is my story,
this is my song,
praising my saviour
all the day long.
This is my story,
this is my song,
Praising my saviour
all the day long.

Verse 2
Perfect submission,
perfect delight,
visions of rapture
burst on my sight
Angels descending
bring from above
echoes of mercy
whispers of love.

Verse 3
Perfect submission,
all is at rest,
I in my Saviour
am happy and blest
watching and waiting,
looking above,
filled with his goodness,
lost in his love

The Blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding,
keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord:

And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
